What type of ransom does Jesus achieve by sacrificing His life as “the Son of Man”? 10 TODAY PART 1: AUTHORITY ISSUES AUTHORITY TO FORGIVE SINS What type of authority did Jesus demonstrate during His ministry as “the Son of Man”? 11 12 2 10/5/2025 Matthew 9:2-8 Some men brought to Him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the man, “Take Matthew 9:2-8 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!” heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” 13 14 Matthew 9:2-8 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and Matthew 9:2-8 “But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So He said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” walk’? 15 16 Matthew 9:2-8 Then the man got up and went home. IMPORTANT INSIGHT Everyone – especially the Jewish teachers of the Law (who were accusing Jesus of blasphemy) – When the crowd saw this, they were filled knew the pronouncement of absolution with awe; and they praised God, who had (forgiveness) was only performed by a priest. given such authority to a man. Here, Jesus claims that authority for Himself. The Son of Man is exercising priestly authority. 17 18 3 10/5/2025 Mark 2:23-28 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the AUTHORITY OVER THE SABBATH grainfields, and as His disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” 19 20 Mark 2:23-28 Mark 2:23-28 Jesus answered, “Have you never read “In the days of Abiathar the high priest, what David did when he and his he entered the house of God and ate the companions were hungry and in need? consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 21 22 IMPORTANT INSIGHT Jesus is not appealing to the authority of King AUTHORITY TO JUDGE David, but to that of Abiathar, the high priest who permitted them to eat bread that had been consecrated to God. This response to His critics is a claim to have high priestly authority. 23 24 4 10/5/2025 Matthew 16:24-27 Ezekiel 44:24a “For the Son of Man is going to come in “In any dispute, the priests are to serve his Father’s glory with His angels, and as judges and decide it according to My then He will reward each person ordinances…” according to what they have done.” 25 26 IMPORTANT INSIGHT God appointed the community of priests to serve as Israel’s judges under the Old Covenant. When Jesus says He will judge all men, He claims authority that is priestly AND divine. SPOILER ALERT! After His arrest, Jesus is judged by Israel’s priests. He submits to their authority. When the high priest questions His identity, Jesus’ cryptic response means: “You will know I am THE Son of Man when you suffer the consequences of rejecting Me.” Here, he claims prophetic, regal (kingly), priestly, and divine authority. 27 28 Matthew 26:57-66 Those who had arrested Jesus took Him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had Matthew 26:57-66 The high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God. assembled. 29 30 5 10/5/2025 Matthew 26:57-66 IMPORTANT INSIGHT Jesus’ words and actions in the temple were a “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I prophetic warning to those who rejected Him. He’s say to all of you: From now on you will referencing them when He says: “You will know I see the Son of Man sitting at the right am the Son of Man when the clouds of divine hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” judgment burst.” His prophecy was fulfilled in 70AD. The Jews rebelled against Rome. Many were slaughtered, the temple was sacked, and the survivors were banished from their land. 31 32 Romans 8:34 THE “SON OF MAN” AS OUR HIGH PRIEST IN HEAVEN Christ Jesus who died—more than that, 33 34 who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 Hebrews 2:17-18 For there is one God and one Mediator Jesus had to be made like [us], fully between God and mankind, the man human in every way, in order that He Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a might become a merciful and faithful ransom for all people.
